 6 Pounder Scott Hamel
Scott Hamel scores 1st Birth to National Championship
BASS Federation Nation Central Divisional
Jackson, MS Ross Barnett Reservoir – June 13-15, 2007
Flow Chart for Road to Classic
This coming November Western Kansas Angler, Scott Hamel, will be representing the great State of Kansas at the BASS Federation Nation National Champion Ship, site TBA.
Scott is very proud of his accomplishment and is eager for his shot at the National Champion Title and a possible birth into the 2008 BASSMASTERS Classic. (Feb. 2008)
Scott was very candid on stage, about how the entire week led up to his victory. “Kerry and I pre-fished together, we shared all the spots during the tournament and really worked close to figure out the best areas, on an unfamiliar lake”. “We stuck with the layered super thick pads, using Swamp Donkeys.
“It was critical to locate the pads behind the pad fields that covered the small depressions, with hundreds of acres of Lilly pads it was the key factor”, in location of the winning stringer.
“I had to just barely crawl, sometimes hop, the Black “Donkey”, from Pad to Pad, making sure I did not stop it on the center of the pad it had to be on the seams. In this way, with heavy focused concentration, when the bass would bump the bottom of the pad, all I had to do was nudge the bait to the hole and help it fall in.” “The fish would crush the bait”, Scott said.
The other primary ingredient to success was having a solid rod, I used Fenwick’s Techna AV, Revo STX Reels and 65# Spiderwire Stealth – in Moss Green. Using this combination, once I had one hooked up, increased my odds on landing that fish.
“The swing moment for me in the entire event came down to a snap decision, to run back up lake with only 30 minutes before weigh in. I didn’t have a fish at 2 pm, figured it would take 8 minutes up and 10 minutes back to the weight in. I got to the spot made 2 casts, caught a 2 pounder and hammered down to the weigh in. I made it back with 2 minutes to spare.”
The margin of victory over Kerry Kruep, who finished in 2nd place, was 1 pound 4 oz’s.”
